Swan Daley a.k.a @swanlikethebird has been singing covers on Instagram since 2017 and in 2020 started filming songwriting and music theory lessons on TikTok. From learning neo-soul chord progressions or how to structure your songs, Daley is giving advice for anyone that loves music and does not know where to start. Daley now has over 30,000 followers on TikTok and almost 300 YouTube subscribers.
From a young age, Daley began learning piano by watching YouTube tutorials. By 15 years old, he was researching how to make hip-hop beats and incorporated his piano skills in his process. His dream was to become a producer, and he realized he had a passion for making music. One skill that influenced him greatly was sampling because he found a deep appreciation for various genres of music such as funk and rock. Later on, his friend and fellow music artist, Devix, convinced Daley to start performing and post covers online starting in 2017 Over these past three years, Daley worked hard to establish a substantial fanbase looking for his advice and voice. He also mentioned how he looked up to his inspirations such as J Dilla, Erykah Badu, and D’Angelo, which made him realize “if I quit now, I will never [be on their] talent level.” Over the course of the pandemic, Daley’s following has grown tremendously, and he’s excited to perform for his supporters once it’s safe again. He shares “beforehand, I would just play at random bars and people weren’t there for me they were there to drink […] Now I’m performing for people that want to see me.”
Daley explained that the reason he started uploading songwriting and music theory tips on TikTok was to test the app’s algorithm. He realized if wanted to expand his audience he needed to diversify his content by incorporating trends, or making comedic and educational videos.
In the future, Daley plans to put out more music and begin songwriting consulting. On another note, some artists Daley would love to collaborate with at the moment include Thundercat, Steve Lacy, and Tom Misch. Overall, Daley is excited put himself in front of more people, and provide more value for his supporters whether that’s through his music or lessons. If you want to support a new artist, Swan Daley is definitely someone you should check out if you need tips on your next song or want to hear the new Philly sound.
